Information about Robert
A head of chemistry with a precise, understanding-based approach to GCSE and A Level sciences.
Availability: Evenings and weekends
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I have been teaching for eight years and in that time have taught Chemistry up to A-Level across two specifications, OCR A and OCR Salters, and have tutored iGCSE and AQA A Level. I have also taught Biology and Physics to triple GCSE-level on the AQA specification. In that time I have supported several students into science degrees at high-level universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
I am currently Head of Chemistry at a large secondary school in Hampshire that has a sixth form. This role has required me to have a strong understanding of the curriculum and how to deliver the content in a way that ensures success. I have trained other members of staff to deliver specific content and recognize the difficulties and misconceptions students face when facing their examinations.
I recognize that GCSE science, and chemistry in particular, is a difficult subject. There are many abstract concepts that are difficult to visualize. I believe that in order to properly approach questions students need to not just recall knowledge but understand it. As a result, I use models and analogies to allow students to fully grasp concepts before applying these ideas to an examination context. This allows for students to ensure they have the key knowledge underpinning the topic before they can use precise language to explain it in a way that means students feel confident when they approach questions.
I am both patient and resilient, which I believe are vital characteristics to support tutees developing in the subject. There is every chance that concepts may not be grasped immediately, in which case I am able to provide support and review and improve students understandings through the use of modelling and questioning. These help root out tutees` misconceptions and help them gain confidence in their own abilities.
My secure subject knowledge also means I can produce and supply resources to help support tutees` progress. These vary depending on prior attainment, goals and learning styles as every child is different and requires a unique, tailor-made approach to give them the opportunity they need.
