Information about David
I am an experienced tutor who has taught a wide variety of English-related subjects, both literary and linguistic, at the highest level I have also worked in the fields of history, archaeology, codicology, palaeography, and have specialised in the study of dead languages. I have recently completed my PhD in medieval Scandinavian literature at the University of Durham, during which I taught undergraduates in the Department of English Studies across the whole gamut of English literature for several years. I was also involved with a local museum, engaging with visitors and organising school visits to teach people about the early medieval history of Northumberland. I am also a published writer, of both academic work and creative writing.
I believe that the great strength of one-to-one tutoring is its adaptability it is very easy for one person to be swallowed up in a large classroom, but impossible in private tuition. I tailor all my tutoring to the individual needs of the student. Whether the aim is to pass a particular exam, or to improve the quality of written and spoken English, or to gain a better understanding of some aspect of literature more generally, I can help. I am also very happy to take on mature students who are not saddled by the constraints of a syllabus, and to adapt my teaching to their own interests. It is my philosophy that teaching should be enthusiastic and engaging, and that the student should be comfortable and encouraged to work towards their own goals.

Experience: Over the course of my PhD I gained a reputation for being a reliable and effective teacher and was trusted to teach a wider variety of subjects than is normally allowed, spanning the literary canon from early medieval works to contemporary authors. I received excellent feedback from the students in their anonymous end-of-year surveys, and was often hailed as one of the best tutors in the Department of English Studies. I also acted as a college tutor at St Aidans College, a pastoral role that focused on looking after the welfare of undergraduate students. I have also completed the Durham University Learning & Teaching Award (DULTA), in which I received professional training in teaching methods and which has granted me associate fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. I am, consequently, well versed in all aspects of English literature and its related subjects, and can teach to a very high level.
