Information about Karen
I am currently the Head of English at a school in West Sussex where I teach numerous KS3 and KS4 classes and lead GCSE Masterclasses for students aiming for grades 7-9.
Each year, I lead students towards success, often exceeding their FFT 5 target grade (based on their attainment at primary school). This year, my students` GCSE results were in the top 1% of the country: in a class of 33, 30 students achieved at least a grade 7 in Language, Literature, or both; 22 students achieved at least one grade 8; 8 students achieved at least one grade 9.
I have tutored in person and online and have been praised for challenging students while making the session engaging and relevant to them.
Availability: I am available on weekday evenings and weekend mornings.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have experience leading students to grade 7+ in Language with the exam boards AQA, Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE.
In Literature, I have taught AQA and IGCSE, and I feel particularly confident leading students to reach grades 7+ while studying the following texts (AQA layout):
Paper 1:
All Shakespeare plays, particularly `Macbeth` and `Romeo and Juliet`
`Jekyll and Hyde`, `A Christmas Carol`, `The Sign of the Four`, `Frankenstein`
Paper 2:
`An Inspector Calls`, `Lord of the Flies`, `Animal Farm`, `Pigeon English`
`Power and Conflict` poetry and `Love and Relationships` poetry
Unseen Poetry
I show students what full mark essays, stories and non fiction pieces look like using various models that I have written myself. As I mark for the exam board every summer, I provide students with tips to achieve the highest levels for each assessment objective.
Mostly, we will refine the simplistic arguments and cliches that students use in their writing so that their work stands out compared to the millions of other students that complete their English Language and Literature GCSEs every year.
