Information about Xenia
I have been a STEM tutor throughout my studies in London over the past seven years, and have taught Maths, Biology, and Chemistry at KS3 through to A-level. I have also run lab-based activities and science practicals for groups of school students, and mentored a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students during my lab research experience. I have always tried to make science as fun as possible and to give students the confidence to reach their full potential.
I studied Biology at Imperial College, and later worked on an extremely exciting new tool in Biology called gene drive that may eventually be used to prevent many diseases such as malaria, Dengue, and Zika. I am now pursuing a PhD at the University of Oxford, where I will be working on a similar project to genetically engineer the mosquito that carries Dengue. Through this hands-on research, I have worked at the molecular and cellular level of biology, as well as the broader ecological level, where mathematical modelling is very important.
I would love the opportunity to tutor a student that may be struggling with their Maths or science subject, or just wants to get ahead! I hope that you or they will love the subjects as much as I do, or at least give it a chance to see why it`s so amazing, and so important for the future!
Availability: Weekday evenings and weekends.
Willing to travel: 3 miles
Experience: I was involved in our universitys STEM outreach program that works with young students aged 6-18 from schools across London. As an activity mentor, I assisted students in a wide range of science and maths based lessons and activities, helping to build the next generation of medics, engineers, and scientists from an early age.
Hands-on research in cancer, genetic engineering, and biodiverse ecosystems has allowed me to grasp overarching concepts in biology, which I am able to effectively communicate. I have volunteered as a tutor both at school and university, teaching students 1-to-1 and in small groups. I am reliable, honest, and demanding both of myself and of my students. My multicultural background and language skills make me very adaptable, and influence a diversity of teaching styles to fit many students. Most of all, I hope to make learning science a fun and interactive experience & hope that we both learn something from our lessons.
