Information about Selene

I grew up in Italy, where I attended the European School of Varese with a strong emphasis on science and language subjects. In 2012 I moved to London to start my BSc in Biology at Imperial College London. I covered topics such as molecular biology, evolution and ecology, as well as practicals in statistics and laboratory research. In my final year I discovered my calling for theoretical and field ecology, which led me to undertake a Masters of Research in tropical forest ecology at Imperial College London. During my bachelors and master`s degrees I attended courses in science communication, which have provided me with an interesting perspective on ways we can communicate scientific understanding to public audiences. After my Masters, I took some time off from studying to travel through Asia. Since being back in London, I have gained first hand-experience of working with innovative research groups, including with Imperial College London assessing the impacts of climate change on freshwater Arctic ecosystems, as well as my current placement at Queen Mary University London investigating the cognition and behaviour of bees.

At the end of the year I will be starting my PhD at the University of York where I will be researching the impacts of palm oil cultivation on wildlife and biodiversity in Malaysian Borneo. Till then I would like to spend my time tutoring as I hope to communicate my enthusiasm for biology and scientific research, and help budding young scientists to discover their own path.

My strength in tutoring is that I am patient, adaptable and attentive to each students needs. Everyone has their own style of learning, so for me its very important to spend some time identifying what it is so that the classes are as informative as possible, whilst still being fun and interesting. I like to find something in the topic that the tutee is interested in, as, in my opinion, this makes learning the subject content much easier and more fulfilling.

A key element to my tutoring is working towards boosting their confidence in their understanding of the subject and in asking questions. Working logically through a problem together, I aim to get the student to think of what the solution or explanation may be to a pattern or problem. By guiding them through asking questions to reach logical conclutions, I hope to cultivate their independent and critical thinking, which I believe is highly valuable to structure their thoughts when faced with difficult exam questions. These are important skills which can applied across most subjects.

Availability: I am available most evenings during the week, and during the day on weekends.
