Subject areas in which I tutor:
=====================
I have extensive experience providing tuition in the following subjects:
(1) Engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Please see below for the subjects I cover.
(2) A-level Maths and Further Maths and GCSE maths, Further maths.
I cover the syllabus for all years, teaching from first principles to give the student deep insights and a solid understanding of the concepts.
In addition I provide tuition for the MAT and the TMUA examinations for Oxbridge applications for maths and computing.
(3) A-level and GCSE physics
I cover the syllabus for all years on all the major exam boards. In addition I help students with the Physics Admission Test (PAT) to Oxford University.
(3) GCSE Chemistry.
I tutor single science chemistry.
Services I provide include:
===================
(1) Help in understanding course subjects.
(2) Advice on non-technical skills such as writing reports and dissertations, giving presentations, study skills, project management
(3) Advice on how to carry out research, eg: performing a literature review, selecting a topic for research, planning and conducting experimental work, writing up research
(4) Proof-reading dissertations
(5) Mentoring and career advice
(6) General engineering advice
Engineering subjects I cover include:
==========================
- Engineering mathematics
Mechanical Engineering:
________________________________-
- Statics and Rigid body dynamics
- Mechanical vibrations
- Solid Mechanics
- Engineering materials
- Fatigue and Fracture mechanics
- Thermodynamics and Heat transfer
- Fluid mechanics and Fluid dynamics
- Finite Element Analysis - modelling and theory
- Control Systems
Civil Engineering:
________________________
- Structural analysis (statically determinate and indeterminate structures)
- Design of steel and concrete structures to Eurocode.
- Structural dynamics
- Soil mechanics and Geotechnics.
- Hydraulics (closed and open channel flow)
Electrical and Electronic Engineering:
__________________________________________________
- AC/DC circuit theory
- Semiconductors
- Digital circuits
Method of tuition:
==================
(1) Face-to-face tuition in the London & Surrey regions.
(2) Online tuition
For online tuition, I use a web-based whiteboard called BitPaper. This allows both tutor and student to talk and write simultaneously on the same board, and while seeing and talking through the Skype web-conferencing application. This is highly regarded by students who notice no difference between online and face to face. BitPaper allows PDF/Microsoft documents and images to be inserted and annotated.

Simon helped me understand a module I had struggled with - structural engineering. He uses an online whiteboard service to make up for not being able to do in person sessions due to Covid and distance and this is a good substitute. He breaks down each topic in to more easily understood sections and finds practice questions to help you reinforce the knowledge of a particular topic.

Dr Simon tutored me in my maths and mechanics modules for my engineering degree. The sessions provided were really good. He explained all the content clearly, which aided a lot with quickly comprehending the topics taught. When I did not understand something, Dr Simon was patient to expand further and able to provide different techniques to clarify a concept. Dr Simon was always punctual and very reliable; I would recommend him as a tutor.
