Y1 Phonics Test - Guidance for Parents

The test takes place in Year 1 in June time.

It is usually conducted by your child s teacher and it is a 1-1 test where the child has to read 40 words.

There are around 3 words on each page of the test booklet.

Some words are real wordsand some are nonsensewords. E.g -gleak.

Your child will use their phonic knowledge to decode the words.

They can sound out the phonemes in the word then blend them together to read it. The teacher will accept the final attempt at reading the word as their answer. So if the child corrects themselves, then this will be accepted.

The test is made up of Phase 4 and Phase 5words aswell as polysyllabicwords (Eg Roundabout)

The pass score is usually around 33 out of 40. It can changebased on govt guidelines.
