Information about Alan

I have taught GCSE and post 16 Chemistry (A Level (OCR and AQA) and IB) in a variety of schools for over 25 years. I have experience of marking and writing Level 3 exams. I have successfully tutored a number of students over the past years at both levels, mainly online but I am happy to give face to face tutoring if that is preferable. I use Zoom for online tutoring with add-on software as required and I have a wealth of teaching resources such as powerpoints and worksheets at GCSE and A Level. My work as an examiner and question setter gives me vital insight into exam technique, and this is central to the way in which I deliver my sessions. The first session is always offered at half-price to ensure it is what you need. I liaise with the student about their areas of need and prepare resources accordingly. Past paper questions are central to way in which I tutor, going through small chunks of theory first and then consolidate with exam questions.

Availability: I am now only available for one-offs. I shall review this throughout the year depending on my other commitments

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have 22 years of A-Level/IB Chemistry teaching and 25+ years of GCSE Science (and some Maths) teaching. I have tutored alongside my teaching for the past 2 years since the advent of Covid-19, and on-and-off for many years. I have held many leadership roles within teaching including Head of Science at a very prestigious Grammar School and Head of Chemistry at 2 very high achieving comprehensive secondary schools. I have been involved in preparing students for Oxbridge/Vet/Medic at my last 3 schools in the UK and can help with the very high challenge questions which differentiate the As from Bs and the A*s from As. I can also boost confidence for students who may have had disappointing mock exam results in year 10 or 12 - a huge amount of progress can be made in the final year both at GCSE and A Level.

I would ask you any parent apply caution to my review. We booked sessions with Alan and he based them on a schedule that he himself provided for us, which was one lesson every fortnite on a Monday. We only had 4 sessions. Two lessons were cancelled within 24 hours. The first cancellation occurred on the day of the lesson, and only after we texted him for a zoom link, and he cancelled on the day. The second cancellation within 23 hours. The key important thing is that this occurred within May, and we are extremely close to exams. To be fair to Alan, he did offer us alternative days, but to be honest, once is an accident, twice is not. How should a potential parent deal with my review? Tutors can be measured on several factors. I will measure on (1) knowledge and (2) timekeeping (1) I believe that Alan very clearly knows his subject matter, and I would give him a 4.5/5 for that. (2) However, timekeeping and managing our expectation: 3 out of 5. If my child can prepare for a day, with the anticipation that the tutor will be there for an hour, then the tutor should also be prepared. I totally understand that things can disrupt a person`s daily routine, and allowances should be made. But twice, in a similar period, so close to exams...I am not sure Anyway, as I said, we only had 4 lessons, and this review may be unfair. I also am aware that this is livelihood for Alan, and I should not take part in a non-positive review, but I am also a parent paying for a service. I am in a dilemma as I do not like to give non-positive reviews. Just a disappointed parent, with chemistry just a week away
